Unsubstantiated Conjecture – Day Two

December 8th, 2009 | by Kyle Elfrink |

Felix Pie?!  Let it never be said that the Royals will leave a stone unturned …

Here’s the run-down as Tuesday nears closing time …

- The Star’s Bob Dutton has been on the prowl throughout the early-going’s and his latest reportage indicates that KC is taking a look see at Felix Pie.  The eternal prospect who has failed at every turn is going nowhere in Baltimore’s crowded outfield picture.  According to Dutton, though, the Royals are finding it tough to find a match with Baltimore.  Can you remember that time just 24 months ago when KC’s future was considered brighter than Baltimore’s?  How things have changed … now the Royals have “positioned” themselves to take junk off of the O’s hands.  I’ll let you draw your own conclusions from that.

- As we stated in our Winter Meetings preview post, the Royals need to kick the tires on just about any catcher that might be floating around in free agency or on the trade market.  That seems to be what they are doing.  Nearly every has-been or never-was backstop that is looking for a new gig has had their name connected to the Royals.  Let’s see, you’ve got Yorvit Torrealba, Jason Kendall, and Rod Barajas.  What, no Hector Villanueva?!

- Dayton Moore seems very willing to package Alberto Callaspo and also seems to favor Chris Getz as the team’s second baseman with defense being the decisive factor.

- Teams are asking about Gil Meche, but are offering very little to entice the Royals’ front office.

- Detroit made a huge deal earlier by shipping Curtis Granderson to the Yanks and Edwin Jackson to the D’Backs.  In return, they picked up former-Mizzou hurler, Max Scherzer, two young relievers, and New York farmhand, Austin Jackson, who is considered the future Tiger centerfielder. The biggest numbers?  Detroit now controls these four for a combined 22 years.  They save $25-million over three years by flipping Granderson.  And, they avoid Jackson’s arbitration and winter 2011 free agency.  This is what we call an excellent cost-cutting deal.
